History
Years ago, when the Principality of An Tir was still part of the
Kingdom of the West, the heart of the Kingdom lay far away. Since
most of the Western peerage lived fifteen to twenty hours from the An
Tirian heart-land, they had little opportunity to consider those of
us who had attained a peerage level in our endeavors. Was a
particular An Tirian fit company for a civilized court? Did they
dance or scribe? Did they possess knowledge of period entertainments
and have a basic understanding of heraldry? Did they willingly share
their accomplishments with others?
In order to facilitate the advancement of An Tirians, the landed
Baronesses developed a series of Trials that focused on peer-like
qualities. Those who passed the Trials became part of an elite
Baronesses' Guard. Therefore, when an An Tirian Sergeant came up in a
Peerage council, it would be obvious that many a pertinent question
had already been answered. The Guard became a Kingdom Order that bore
the title "Sergeant," a designation borrowed from the armed guards of
the Crusades. Thus was born the uniquely An Tirian tradition of
Sergeantry.
Today, a member of the Sergeantry is an accomplished person whose
peer-like qualities make him or her welcome at any Court. With the
advent of missile and rapier combat, the Sergeantry was opened to
Yeomen and Gallants, respectively. Those who wish to pursue service
and non-martial skills may earn the rank of Courtier. Some baronies
also include "Lancer" for equestrians, the Barony of Terra Pomaria
has not yet had someone achieve the rank of Lancer.
Sergeant, Yeoman, Gallants, Lancers and Courtiers are not honours,
they are ranks. This means that they are not given as an award by
someone for past work done. Instead, there are a set of tests. If you
pass all the tests, you receive the rank. If you do not pass one of
the tests, you do not receive the rank.
The position of Sergeant-at-Arms of the Barony of Terra Pomaria and
the specialized equivalent ranks of Yeoman, Gallant, and Lancer
(hereafter referred to as "Sergeantry") were developed to allow
individuals the opportunity to demonstrate military and chivalric
skills with the goal of becoming qualified military leaders of the
Barony. With the passage of time, the Sergeantry has also come to be
respected as role models for all who interact with the Barony, and
they are valued as vital contributors to the social aspects of the
group as well as the military. The Sergeantry is responsible for the
security and safety of the Barony and its members form the Guard of
Honor for the Baron and Baroness.
Additionally, many ceremonial and service obligations are the sole
domain of the Sergeantry. Those individuals who successfully
complete the trials will be required to swear fealty to the Barony of
Terra Pomaria through the entities of the Baron and Baroness and will
have the right to wear the buckle of this rank and any other tokens
that the Baron and Baroness may decide.
Privileges, Obligations, and Administration (Sergeantry)
All members of the Sergeantry are considered equals whether they are
Sergeant, Yeoman, Gallant, or Lancer. All codes of conduct and by-laws will be developed and enforced by the Sergeantry themselves.
There will be no more than one chance per year for a new Sergeantry
to be inducted into the ranks. An unsuccessful applicant may re-enter
another time, but must abide by the current testing standard and
requirements. There will be no minimum or maximum number of
Sergeantry.
With the rank of Sergeantry, there also comes privileges and
obligations:
Privileges of the Rank
- To wear a special belt and buckle or other token of this rank
as determined by the Baron and Baroness.
-
To recommend to the Baron and Baroness changes to the requirements
for this rank should they be needed.
- To have a place in the Baronial Courts of Terra Pomaria
- Such other privileges as are appropriate.
Obligations of the Rank
- To protect and defend the Barony of Terra Pomaria and it's Baron and
Baroness

is required by the Sergeantry's honor and the Code of Chivalry.

SCA.
- To maintain a level of competence in accordance with the
requirements of this rank.
- To support and aid in the training of novice fighters, not
only in skill at arms, but in all manner of thoughtful and courteous
behavior; remembering at all times that the Sergeantry embodies an
ideal as well as a rank.
- To be available for service and ceremonial functions as
required by the Baron and Baroness.
- The Sergeantry are sworn in fealty to the Baroness of Terra
Pomaria.
The position of Courtier shall be equal in rank and privilege to that
of the Sergeantry of the Barony of Terra Pomaria. As with the
members of the Sergeantry, Courtiers will come to be respected as
role models for all who interact with the Barony, and they will be
valued as vital contributors to the social aspects of the group as
well as to the "Gentler Arts." The Courtiers are responsible for the
nurturing and development of the Arts & Sciences within the Barony
and it members are granted places of honor within the Courts of the
Baron and Baroness.
The Courtier's primary purpose is to serve the Baron as examples of
courtesy, etiquette, and nobility to the populace of the Barony and
to visiting dignitaries. To be a capable administrator, knowledgeable in the Laws of the Kingdom, Principality and Corpora.
To be knowledgeable and well proficient in service in court, feast,
and to the administration of the Barony. An understanding that such
a rank carries with it great responsibilities even in the performance
of the most menial of tasks and the most monumental of tasks.
Service by its very nature may involve performing a less than
desirable task because of its necessity. A Courtier must undertake
all tasks discreetly, with propriety, courtesy, dignity, grace, and
cheerful disposition. The rewards for such service may at times seem
all too slight, however a Courtier understands the true reward of
service is not found in the public recognition, the gilt tokens
presented, but in pride in a necessary job done well. A diligent and
loyal Courtier will find the rewards are well worth the effort.
Additionally, many ceremonial and service obligations are the sole
domain of the Courtiers, along with the members of the Sergeantry.
Those individuals who successfully complete the trials will be asked
to swear fealty to the Barony of Terra Pomaria in the form of the
entities of the Baron and Baroness and will have the right to wear
the regalia of this rank and any other tokens as the Baron and
Baroness may decide. The Courtiers are in primary service to the
Baron of Terra Pomaria.
